As one of the two Maritime History groups in the U3a, we voyage to places both near and far. Our programme covers various interesting topics on maritime issues, some of our topics have included: the history of London Docks; the origins of Thames River Police; the rise of Venice as a maritime power; how the Navy is supported by land and sea.
In choosing our avenues of research we have travelled both in time and distance and connected with other world cultures that use the sea as well as their histories. How far did the Vikings get? How did they navigate? Where did the Spice Trade get its spices from?
At present, due to the ravages of time, the crew list has been sadly diminished, and we would welcome some additional voyagers, so if you would like to join us for an armchair voyage of discovery, Brian would be happy to sign you on and co-ordinate a cruise schedule. We meet once a month on a suitable Wednesday morning in Kings Langley to share our research and discuss new voyages.
